High Performance Learning

Grounded in research. Driven by communication, practice, and growth

High Performance Learning is a comprehensive educational philosophy and teaching framework developed over four decades by Professor Deborah Eyre. Grounded in extensive research and evidence, it identifies purposeful communication, consistent practice, and a growth mindset as essential elements for effective teaching and learning. Central to this approach is the belief that every student has the potential to achieve high performance, thanks to the brain’s ability to adapt and grow.

Why have we introduced HPL at Heathside?

We have adopted the High Performance Learning framework because we are confident that every pupil stands to gain from its approach to teaching and learning. It fosters a culture of practice, resilience, and a growth mindset. This is grounded in the belief that all pupils can reach their own high levels of achievement according to the brain’s ability to adapt and grow. We are committed to helping every pupil realise academic success and lead a life rich in opportunity and fulfilment, no matter where they begin.

As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence, our school is working towards the prestigious High Performance Schools Award, an initiative that empowers schools to become truly exceptional.

How are we using HPL?

We are embedding High Performance Learning (HPL) across all lessons and assemblies throughout Heathside School to support every student in reaching their full potential.

HPL is built around a set of clearly defined competencies that shape both teaching and learning. These are divided into two key areas:

  • Values, Attitudes and Attributes (VAAs): These guide pupils on how to behave in ways that enhance learning, both inside and outside the classroom. They encourage qualities such as empathy, resilience, and collaboration, skills that are essential not only in school but also in the wider world.
  • Advanced Cognitive Performance (ACPs): These focus on how pupils think, helping them to develop strategies for learning effectively. Rather than concentrating solely on what is learned, ACPs promote deeper thinking, reflection, and problem-solving.

Together, these competencies are broad enough to be relevant across all subjects, yet specific enough to support life-long learning. They help pupils become thoughtful, adaptable learners who are prepared for the challenges of the future.

How will HPL benefit your child?

By nurturing the values, attitudes, and personal qualities essential for a fulfilling future, we are laying the foundation for your child’s success beyond the classroom.

High Performance Learning (HPL) pinpoints the key traits and behaviours that support both academic achievement and personal growth. Through this approach, we inspire our pupils to aim high, pursue excellence, and develop resilience; skills that will serve them well throughout their time at Heathside School and beyond.

How can parents be part of this journey?

Parents play a vital role in supporting High Performance Learning (HPL). Here are some practical and meaningful ways to reinforce the HPL approach beyond the classroom:

Encourage Thinking Skills (ACPs)

  • Help your child develop how they think, not just what they know.
  • Ask open-ended questions like “Why do you think that happened?” or “What would you do differently?”
  • Promote reflection by discussing what went well in their day and what they might improve.
  • Support problem-solving with puzzles, strategy games, or real-life challenges like planning a trip or budgeting.

Reinforce Positive Behaviours (VAAs)

  • Model and nurture the values, attitudes, and attributes that foster success:
  • Empathy & Collaboration: Encourage teamwork at home—whether through shared chores or family projects—and talk about understanding others’ perspectives.
  • Resilience: Celebrate effort, not just results. Help them see setbacks as learning opportunities.
  • Confidence & Independence: Let them make choices and take responsibility for tasks, building self-belief and autonomy.

Create a Learning-Friendly Environment

  • Set aside a quiet, distraction-free space for homework and reading.
  • Encourage curiosity by exploring topics together—watch documentaries, visit museums, or read articles on subjects they love.
  • Celebrate achievements and progress, no matter how small.

Stay Connected with School

  • Talk to your child about what they’re learning and how HPL is used in class.
  • Attend school events or workshops that explain the HPL approach.
