At Heathside, we value and celebrate the diversity of our school community, making time to explore the traditions and festivals of all faiths. This week, we marked Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, in ways that were both educational and fun for our pupils.

In our Cygnets class, the youngest children learned about Rosh Hashanah through the book My First Rosh Hashanah, discovering the meaning behind special foods such as apples dipped in honey and pomegranates. The children delighted in tasting these treats and described them as “nice and sweet.” They also took part in a creative activity, making beautiful apple handprints, and enjoyed singing a Rosh Hashanah song together. A special thank you to Hannah, who joined us to share ideas about how her family celebrates this important occasion.

Year 3 pupils also explored the festival and had the pleasure of hearing from Shay-Li and Aviva, who shared how they and their families observe Rosh Hashanah. These first-hand accounts helped our students understand the significance of the holiday and the customs that make it so meaningful.

At Heathside, celebrating different faiths helps our pupils develop respect, understanding, and curiosity about the world around them. Shanah Tovah to all our families who observed Rosh Hashanah this year—we hope it was a joyful time filled with sweetness and togetherness. By learning about each other’s traditions, we continue to nurture an inclusive, supportive, and culturally aware community.
